Unlike the rest of the world, night shift workers sleep when the sun is still out. They have to contend with light exposure once they’re done with their shift.
If you’re a regular night shift worker, you’ll benefit from wearing these glasses from the time you get off work to when you’re ready for bed. Doing this helps minimize disruptions to your sleep-wake cycle.
Ideally, like daytime workers, you want to be getting ready for bed in a dark environment. But the reality for you is that morning light exposure is unavoidable after your shift. You’re exposed to it during the commute or as you’re winding down at home. It is daytime after all.
According to CDC, blue light blocking glasses minimize the amount of blue light seen by your retina(3). Wearing a pair between the time you leave work to before you hit the hay, may mean drifting off faster and staying asleep longer.
We recommend wearing your blue light blocking glasses as soon as your shift is over. Keep them on until you get into bed, when you transition to a 100% light blocking sleep mask.
Take note that wearing them while you’re still at work isn’t a good idea. You want to expose yourself to blue light, instead. Otherwise, you may feel sleepy and unproductive.
The Other Shift says it’s important to get some exposure to blue light while working the night shift. It helps your internal clock know what time of day it is(4). And in this case, the world’s typical evening is your daytime, workwise.
